Brief Overview of the Founding Idea of the Libyan Maritime Association
The idea of establishing the Libyan Maritime Association originated with Mr. Ahmed Bredan, a former Navy Captain , who recognized the need for a national entity that would bring together experts and professionals from across Libya in all maritime fields. Inspired by similar organizations in other countries, he envisioned an independent civil organization serving as a national think tank that provides studies and solutions to benefit society.
The initiative began in February 2025, when Mr. Bredan shared his idea with Captain Omar Fannoush and Captain Salah Al-Jamal, who welcomed and encouraged the proposal, offering strong moral support to move forward. The administrative and documentation process for establishing the association took about eight months, resulting in the membership of 108 professionals from nine Libyan cities, reflecting widespread interest within the maritime community.
Following two general assembly meetings, the association was officially recognized by the Libyan Authority for Scientific Research – Department of Scientific and Cultural Affairs / Division of Scientific Associations, and was granted Registration Decision No. (917) for the year 2025.
The Libyan maritime community warmly welcomed the association as a national center of expertise, operating on the principles of volunteerism and scientific contribution. It stands today as a non-governmental, non-profit making Organization , dedicated to advancing marine sciences and supporting sustainable development in Libya.
